Italy trip preparation: documents, budget, packing and connectivity

Italy rewards preparation in an unglamorous way: the things that go wrong are usually queues you did not book ahead for, cities that are hotter than expected, and cash you assumed you would not need.

Entry and documents

Italy is in the Schengen area. Whether you need a visa, and how long you may stay, depends on your nationality — check the official source below. Non-exempt travellers should also be aware of the EU entry systems being phased in; confirm current requirements close to your travel date.

Carry identification. Hotels register guests and will ask for your passport at check-in.

What it costs

Costs vary sharply between major tourist cities and everywhere else, and between peak summer and the shoulder seasons. Sit-down service near a landmark costs several times what the same food costs two streets away.

Cards are widely accepted, but keep some cash for small cafés, markets and rural areas.

When to go and what to pack

Summers in the cities are hot and busy; spring and autumn are considerably more comfortable for walking, which is how you will spend most of your time. Winters in the north are cold.

Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes matter more here than almost any other item — historic centres are cobbled and you will cover long distances. Cover for shoulders and knees is required to enter many churches.

Getting online and getting around

Regional trains connect most places worth visiting and are usually better value than flying internally. Book high-speed routes ahead; they get more expensive close to departure.

Sort data before you arrive so maps and ticket apps work from the airport.
