UAE and Dubai trip preparation: documents, budget, packing and connectivity
The UAE is straightforward to travel in and easy to misjudge in two ways: how extreme the summer heat is, and how quickly costs add up if you default to tourist-facing options. Both are solvable with a little preparation.

Entry and documents
Visa rules vary widely by nationality — some get visa-on-arrival, others must apply in advance. Check the official source below before booking.
Keep a digital and paper copy of your passport and accommodation booking. Some hotels ask for identification on arrival.
What it costs
Accommodation and activities are where budgets go wrong. Public transport in Dubai is inexpensive and good; taxis and tourist attractions are not. Food ranges from very cheap to extremely expensive within the same neighbourhood.
Cards are accepted almost everywhere, so you need less cash than in most destinations.
Heat, packing and etiquette
Summer heat is genuinely extreme and shapes what is realistic to do outdoors. If you are travelling between roughly May and September, plan indoor activities during the day and expect to move between air-conditioned spaces.
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing plus a light layer for aggressive indoor air conditioning — the temperature swing catches people out. Dress modestly in public areas, malls and religious sites; beach and pool areas are more relaxed.
Getting online and getting around
Sort data before arrival. Note that some voice and video calling apps are restricted on local networks, which surprises people who plan to call home that way — check before you rely on it.
The Dubai Metro is cheap and covers most of what visitors want; a rechargeable travel card is worth getting on arrival.
